INT-OSHA initiative – working outdoors in hot weather

The U.S. Department of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has kicked off a national outreach initiative about the hazards of working outdoors in hot weather.
Every year, thousands of workers across the country suffer from serious heat-related illnesses. If not quickly addressed, heat exhaustion can become heat stroke, which has killed – on average – more than 30 workers annually since 2003. Labour-intensive activities in hot weather can raise body temperatures beyond the level that normally can be cooled by sweating.

EU-SUBSPORT – a European tool for substitution of dangerous substances at work – launch of the case study database

There is an urgent need to phase out harmful chemicals and replace them with safer alternatives or techniques to reduce adverse health effects and environmental pollution. SUBSPORT, the Substitution Support Portal, is a free-of-charge multilingual web portal providing tools and guidance for substance evaluation and substitution management.
On 24th May 2012, the case story database presenting practical real-case examples of companies and other stakeholders that have done successful substitution work will be launched at the ECHA stakeholder forum in Helsinki.

EU, ETSC, PRAISE occupational road safety handbook

This handbook represents the culmination of 3 years of work within the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) PRAISE project to promote best practice regarding road safety in the work context.

EU, ETSC, PRAISE occupational road safety seminar presentations

Presentations from the ETSC PRAISE event on occupational road safety on 25 April Brussels are now online. The event was organised jointly with EU-OSHA, who organised a session on the European ‘Working Together’ Healthy Workplaces campaign on worker participation in the road transport sector.

FI - Conference on Active Ageing at Work to be held in August, 2013

The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) is organising an International Conference "Work, Wellbeing and Wealth: Active Ageing at Work". The event will bring together researchers, experts and European networks in the area to discuss the major research and development needs and solutions.
 

HU – Redefining Environmental Health and Safety in Emerging Markets, 27-29 September, Budapest

EU- Alcohol interlocks: A tool to intensify the fight against drink-driving - Barcelona, 31st May 2012

An alcohol interlock programme can be an effective means to prevent recidivism from the part of serious offenders who have previously had their right to drive suspended for drink driving offences. ETSC together with the the Generalitat of Catalonia are setting up an international seminar in Barcelona on the implementation and use of alcohol interlocks, focusing particularly on rehabilitation schemes and voluntary use in commercial transport.

GR - Student Photo Competition Award "Health protection at Work"

On 9th of March 2012, an award ceremony was organized at the Benetatou Cultural Center of Psychico Municipality, Athens, Greece, where twenty three awards (15 awarded and 8 commended photos) were announced by the Mayor Mr. Pantelis Xyridakis. The awards presented to the winners of the photo competition focusing on the “Protection of Health at Work”, which was organized among the students of the local seventeen public and private high schools and general secondary schools of the Psychico Municipality.

DK - New Danish Centre for Nano Safety to address risk assessment of nanoparticles

The next three years, scientists at the new Danish Centre for Nano Safety will explore how to best protect workers and to improve risk assessment of nanoparticles at the workplace. The center is headed by Professor Ulla Vogel from the National Institute of Occupational Health. The Working Environment Research Fund supports the centre with 30 million Danish crowns.
 

ES-Asbestos – compensation fund proposed in the Bask region

The background report, submitted by the director of Osalan, Pilar Collantes, notes that in Spain between 1960 and 1995 a total of 2.6 million tons of asbestos were consumed. Mesothelioma cases were estimated at 700/year for Spain, based on estimates from comparable EU countries. Officially, between 2002 and 2006, 120 and 250 deaths annually have been recognized. According to these calculations, the report estimates for the Bask region about 33 cases of asbestosis and 62 mesotieliomas a year, 16.7% of all cases in Spain.

Interaction between human resources management and OHS – Teaching of future managersIn an increasingly competitive economic context, companies have to control the costs of OHS management in terms of contributions paid to the CSST, investments in protective equipment and preventive measures, as well as the indirect costs related to prolonged absences and work disabilities. Companies are noting that the successful implementation of preventive OHS measures has mobilizing effects on the involvement of workers in production, in quality control, in improving the working climate, and in the social cohesion of teams. However, the implementation of such measures raises many challenges for managers.

EU-SUBSPORT Substitution portal

On 24 May, the SUBSPORT portal will be officially launched, and its case story database will be made public online. The case story database is an interactive tool to search for practical real-case substitution examples provided by companies and other stakeholders as well as examples and information on substitution options found in literature. The official launch of SUBSPORT will be held as a free of charge side event at the Helsinki Chemicals Forum (www.helsinkicf.eu) on 24 May 17.00-18.00, at the Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre, Helsinki, Finland.
